The small courtyard in the centre of Berlin is enclosed by office buildings designed by Tchoban Voss Architekten. As it is a walled open-air space, its design responds to the colour code of the architecture and builds a creative conflict: the cosiness of an interior with a floral patterned carpet similar to a baroque wallpaper ornament clashes with the representative character of a public place. The design shifts the reality with oversized yellow flowers on the black floor.

The strong character of Tchoban Voss’ architecture, with its strongly contrasting, shining black granite surfaces and brass frames, is given a playful note by the similar tonality of the yellow colour on asphalt. In this way, the significant charm and massive materiality of the façade are accompanied by an almost decadent pleasure in exuberance and extravagance of form and colour. Flanked by a shining black granite wall illuminated in a randomly generated rhythm, the courtyard space evokes an atmosphere which – with its finely carved production of cinematographic sequences –  reminds one of a courtly ritual.
